System Advantages

The T-WALL Retaining Wall System offers several advantages to contractors, consultants, and owners. From innovative engineering solutions to a long-term, maintenance free service life to bottom line cost savings, T-WALL can meet and exceed your project needs.

Innovative Cost Saving Solutions

Your Solution Provider

The Neel Company considers all aspects of a project to determine the optimal T-WALL solution.

We are happy to discuss even preliminary stage projects and offer solutions that eliminate cost and increase efficiency.

For established projects, we work with owners, consultants, and contractors to reduce cost and remedy unexpected complications.

Our innovative solutions make T-WALL an optimal choice for Design-Build projects.

Our Solutions Reduce or Eliminate:

  • Ground Improvement Needs
  • Excavation
  • Service Interruptions
  • Temporary Shoring
  • Hazardous Material Removal

Project Highlights

I-95 Girard Ave. Interchange
Philadelphia, PA

A proprietary combination of lightweight foamed concrete and granular backfill reduced the bearing pressure and eliminated the need for ground improvement – thereby removing the added cost of dealing with contaminated soils.

Metra Englewood Flyover, CREATE P-1
Chicago, IL

Multiple pile-supported, cast-in-place retaining walls were originally specified. Four of the walls were value-engineered using T-WALL to eliminate deep foundation improvements and accelerate construction.

NEW Inverted T-WALL Advantages

Benefits for Rail & Highway

  • Add Lanes, Add Tracks
  • Keep Trains Moving Safely
  • Eliminate/Minimize Zone A Encroachment
  • Maintain Existing Right-of-Ways
  • Further Reduce/Eliminate Shoring
  • Even Less Granular Fill
  • Even Less Excavation
  • Even Less Material Hauling

Inverted T-WALL combines all the benefits of standard T-WALL with minimal or no need for shoring and excavation. Optimal for rail and highway expansion in areas with extremely limited right-of-way, Inverted T-WALL keeps existing lanes or tracks open while adding new.

Heavy-Duty, Quality Materials

T-WALL is the heavyweight system of the retaining wall industry. The system that stands alone – monolithic T-WALL units have no connection fatigue.

Learn More

Heavy-duty, reinforced precast units are 5,000 psi concrete
and have at least 2″ of concrete cover over rebar reinforcements.
Pre-qualified local manufacturers are NPCA or PCI certified, ensuring precast quality.

Time, Material, & Cost Savings

Save Time

Reduced excavation
On average, T-WALL has a smaller base width than other systems, allowing for less excavation, less temporary shoring, and reduced right-of-way needs.

Easy, rapid installation
Small crews can erect a wall quickly and accurately with minimal instruction. With no soil reinforcements to connect and no bracing, clamping, or battering required, the monolithic stand-alone units save time and costs.

Year-round construction
All weather construction can be completed throughout the year, as can concurrent production and construction.

Save Materials

Works with excavated material
Excavated material may be usable behind the T-WALL stems, balancing cuts and fills.

Less required backfill
T-WALL requires approximately 45% less backfill compared to MSE wall systems. Learn more about the granular backfill requirements for T-WALL here.

Reusable temporary structures
T-WALL units can be placed and filled, then later uninstalled and reused.

The T-WALL system is drainage structure, pipe, and utility compatible, eliminating the need for adaptive components.

I-95 GR3, Philadelphia, PA
T-WALL allowed for the use of recycled concrete backfill, reducing project costs.

Save Money

Wider range of acceptable backfill than MSE
The all-concrete system eliminates corrosion concerns and the need for chemical testing. Economic backfills such as recycled concrete can be used.

Reduce or eliminate ground improvement
Stand-alone T-WALL units allow for the use of geofoam and easily accommodate lightweight flowable fill.

Eliminate or reduce service interruptions
Optimal for phased construction and accelerated construction, T-WALL can reduce or eliminate the need for lane or track closures.

Reduced right-of-way needs
Due to its small footprint and compact construction area, T-WALL has limited right-of-way needs.

Set It and Forget It

The all-concrete T-WALL Retaining Wall System is virtually maintenance free, you can ‘set it and forget it.’

Long-term service life

Monolithic T-WALL units are made of heavy-duty, structurally reinforced concrete – a proven industry standard for long-term use. With no buried metal,  T-WALL units eliminate corrosion concerns.
In contrast, other systems utilize metal or polymer connections, limiting backfill options and allowing for corrosion due to soil chemistry,  marine influences, or compromised freight.

Project Highlight: Kosciuszko Bridge

The $555 million Kosciuszko Bridge Design-Build project is the single largest contract in NYSDOT history. T-WALL was selected in part because it could meet the unique service life requirements of the project.

Preferred by Class I Railroads

Advantages for Rail

Class I railroads prefer the heavyweight T-WALL system. Reinforced precast T-WALL units are 5,000 psi concrete and have at least 2” of concrete cover over rebar, eliminating corrosion concerns from –

  • Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel
  • Soil chemistry
  • Stray current
  • Compromised freight
