Project Description

The T-WALL Retaining Wall System was selected by SEPTA for the expansion of their maintenance and storage yard in Malvern, PA. The expansion included three new tracks, two new buildings, and drainage and storm water detention improvements. The Neel Company designed and supplied over half a mile of T-WALL to support the added tracks. Designed for Cooper E-80 freight train loads, the T-WALL is up to 28 feet high and features an integrated coping with small aged ashlar finish.

T-WALL was preferred by SEPTA for the project as MSE is not allowed beneath the commuter system’s tracks. Stray current from the electrified SEPTA rail system can cause corrosion of MSE systems, while all-concrete T-WALL units ensure a long-term, maintenance-free service life. Other alternatives to MSE, such as cast-in-place walls or cantilevered solider pile walls with precast panels, are much more expensive and require longer construction times with more labor. T-WALL minimized the amount of union labor and equipment need to construct the massive wall, providing significant cost savings.
